Young Kenny Watson has a troublesome older brother, whom his parents are totally fed up with. Kenny’s older brother Bryon is participating in many different inappropriate exploits such as setting fires and stealing. When Bryon finally sends his family to the breaking point they decide to take their family and relocate to live with a grandmother in Birmingham. The family must strategically plan their packing so that they do not have to stop along the way since they are not exactly welcome in many places along the way South. In the country at this time, 1963, there is a great deal of unease in regards to feelings towards and treatment of people of color in the South. One day when Kenny is looking for his younger sister the unthinkable happens, a church is bombed, with young girls still inside. The setting and plot of this novel really hits home. Readers will relive this historical moment alongside some realistic characters in this well written historical fiction novel.
